Cairo – Egypt
In the cemetery of the capital of Egypt, life coexists with death. A large number of homeless people live in the buildings that house the monuments, often in conditions of deep misery, without electricity and water.
The pressure of urbanization in Cairo in the 20th century and the consequent lack of housing have led to an increase in the number of people living in the areas around the necropolis. Some took refuge inside the mausoleums and tomb enclosures, turning them into makeshift housing.
The issue has been widely publicized and at times there have been exaggerated estimates about the number of people living there, with reports of numbers approaching 1,000,000. However, from my personal experience,, I saw few people living in the “city of the dead”.
